Heifer International

Heifer International envisions a world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet.

Since 1944, Heifer has helped 8.5 million people in more than 125 countries. It began with one person applying a simple concept. A Midwestern farmer, Dan West, was ladling out rations of milk to hungry children during the Spanish Civil War when it hit him: “These children don’t need a cup, they need a cow!”

Forced to decide who would receive the limited rations and who wouldn’t – literally, who would live and who would die – West knew this kind of aid would never be enough. So he formed Heifers for Relief, and the first shipment of 17 heifers left for Puerto Rico to families whose children had never even tasted milk.

Heifers? Young cows that haven’t yet given birth are perfect not only for supplying a continued source of milk, but also for supplying a continued source of support. Other livestock such as sheep, goats, chickens, and more provide the same kind of perpetual gift. Listen to celebrity Alton Brown explain how it works:

As people share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.

You can be a part of Heifer International’s work! By using your stage to tell others about Heifer, you can make a difference in the world. You can help “pass on the gift.”
